ly to admit you as a party to the Texas Agreement itself;
(0) that this last named offer to act jointly with my Com-

pany - was accepted by you in Hongkong, in a cable to the Texas Con- peny itself, and described in your confirmatory letter to the same Company as "quite satisfactory."
(D) that this acceptance by you in Hongkong was in accordance with H.E. the Governor's wishes, as shown in ▲; and
(E) that it is only quite recently, after you in London vetoed Hongkong's acceptance of this joint agency, that His Excellency's views are supposed to have undergone this extraordinary change without anything whatsoever having happened as far as my Company is concerned !
It thus follows, as I need hardly add, that, as far as I per- sonally am concerned, my dealings with you are absolutely at an end; and if I did not recommend to my colleague in London, Mr. E.J. Carroll, to stop further negotiations with you, it is solely and only for the following reasons:
(1) because it seems that the Governor has set his heart upon your appointment, even in preference to Messrs. Dodwell & Company, Ltd., and that, though I have the greatest confidence in Sir F.E. May's per- sonal impartiality, his Government might somehow oreate difficulties for my principals, the Texas Company, to whom I am in loyalty bound and who, also at this juncture, stand so ateadfastly by me;
(2) because I feel that your Mr.Holyoak is merely an unwilling agent, as was Mr. Wade Gardner – be it said in his honor once he becme aware of the true position; having particular regard to the fact that
